February in the garden in Southern California is a far cry from the rest of the country. This year we are lucky to be experiencing some rain, and actual winter weather but we are still able to get into the garden and do some work.
Being in the garden in very relaxing for me, and with my busy schedule sometimes it is hard. I love those wet days that loosen the weeds in the soil, because I sure do have a bunch of them now that it has rained! I like to pop outside and do a little weeding whenever I have a chance. I find it meditative and relaxing.
If your mulch is looking old, it is always a great time to add more mulch. I love adding mulch to the soil, it gives it a fresh clean look. As my garden grows, I see the benefits that the mulch imparts to the soil and the plants. I know a lot of mulch bothers some people, but remember how good it is for the soil and know your plants will flourish with that beautiful mulch adding the soil. Adding compost under the mulch or spraying with compost tea, adds even more to your garden.
In addition to what is on the list be sure to do some rain prep if you haven’t already. Clean gutters is a must, along with checking your landscape drains to make sure they are not blocked up. If you have a rain garden, make sure it is in good shape. Doing a little maintenance before the next big storm is always a great thing to do.
Here is a list of what to do in February in your garden here in Southern California. Take a little time to enjoy yourself outside, it can really give you a wonderful boost.
And don’t forget – It’s Superbowl Sunday (weekend) so prune those roses!
