Eschscholzia californica or our beloved California Poppy is making it’s stage debut on a hillside or open field near you! These beautiful California natives are a staple on our beautiful dry hillsides and should be a reminder that beauty doesn’t mean lots of water. You can incorporate a lovely California Poppy or twenty into your spring landscape.
Please take a moment to look at this link to California Poppy Care, and take a visit to your local nursery or for a real treat (and some unusual varieties of the humble California Poppy) try Theodore Payne.
The California Poppy is bright, cheery, and can really spruce up a landscape. Mixing it with some beautiful native Penstemons like Margarita BOP or dotting a hillside of Ceanothus with them would be a wonderful highlight to a water wise landscape. These beautiful annuals self seed, so you many not have to plant them every year. You can plant from seed, from six packs, or from 4″ pots. You’ll find a size to suite your budget and your mood.
You might also want to think about incorporating some other Poppy plants – this beautiful Matilija Poppy is a real attention grabber in any garden and another low water option.
I’d love to work with you to create a beautiful low water garden, one that will stand the test of time and you can enjoy for years to come.
