February Gardening
February Gardening may sound like an oxymoron but not here in beautiful Southern California. There are plenty of things that we can and should be doing, and there will be many days that you can get a lot accomplished even with El Nino upon us.
There are a few things not on the list, like making sure that you are ready for the rain.
- Clean out rain gutters.
- Make sure drains are not blocked.
- Look at those rain gardens to make sure they are in good shape.
You’ll be prepared for the soaking we so desperately need, and your garden will make good use of it. If you were thinking about adding any California natives, this is a great time to do it. The months for that are running out, so make sure that you take a trip to your favorite nursery (Las Pilitas or Theodore Payne are both great choices) and pick up what you need. Last month the plant of the month at Theodore Payne was Ribes speciosa – so another hummingbird magnet added to my garden.
February gardening can be a little bit uneven, so be sure that you plan for some down time in the cold or rain. Having seed catalogs for next year’s summer veggie crops is a great idea. You can have a nice cup of tea and spend that rainy day on the couch.
Okay, that’s it for now. Enjoy your February Gardening Chore List and don’t forget – Super Bowl Sunday is a great time to prune your roses!! (Tomorrow)
