January gardening is a real thing, well at least in Southern California. There are plenty of thing to do in the garden even if there are not a ton of beautiful plants in the nurseries. This is the time of the year in Southern California that the nurseries have gotten rid of the Christmas trees and started to bring in new plants to get us in the mood for planting. First come the bare root plants. Roses and fruit trees top the list for best items to buy in bare root. You can review what you need to know about Bare Root Plants here, it might help you decide if they are something you want to invest in this year. Next come the shrubs and perennials that like the cooler weather, as it warms up so do your options in plants. More heat love plants, including succulents will make it bit by bit into the nurseries, which for me means I might need to visit weekly.
We are very lucky to have lots to do this month, so if you have not cleaned out your gutters, made sure your drains are clear and generally gotten ready for rain – this would be the perfect time. The forecast is partly sunny this weekend, but the rain is due next week, this week’s January gardening should include prep for rain!
