August Gardening Chores

Removing Lawn

It is time for your list of August Gardening Chores.  It has been super hot lately, so I’m going to remind you to garden in the morning and evening if you can and to stay hydrated.   One of the most important things that you can do this month in Southern California – something that should be on everyone’s August Gardening Chores list – is planning.  Yes, take the next few months to plan changes you want to make.

I’ve also come up with a few new items to add to this list is.

1. Plant Research – if you are in Santa Clarita go visit CLWA’s Conservation Garden and take a look at what is surviving and what is thriving.  Look at how things look over the years.  Go visit drought tolerant nurseries and chat with the owners and workers. Worldwide Exotics Nursery in Lakeview Terrace is one of my favorites.  Tell Shelley & Ken that Julie says, “Hi!”

2. Sheet mulch(away) your grass.  If you are planning to remove lawn and plant in the fall, you can take advantage of the heat and get rid of your old lawn.

3. Take an inspirational journey.  Visit Descanso Gardens, The Huntington, or The Getty Center.

4. Do some research about collecting rain water.  If we do get an El Nino, you want to be prepared.

Some of these things you can even do indoors on your computer or with a nice pile of books and magazines.  Take advantage of that.

If navigating the path to designing a beautiful, useful, water wise garden is too much for you  I would love to share your journey.  Think about calling me at 661-917-3521 or visit my website and contact me there.
