Mother’s Day is here, and if you have a mother like mine she deserves more than a bunch of flowers, she deserves memories. Giving mom beauty in her garden has been a tradition in our family taken to the nth degree by yes, mom herself. For years Mom has gone to my brother’s house to plant annuals with him and his kids for her Mother’s Day.
Leave it to a mom to give someone else the gift of beauty and nature on Mother’s Day.
This year would the a great time to start a tradition grab some annuals if your Mom has a garden that just needs a spruce up, or do a little shopping for perennials and shrubs if you want something more long lasting. Then spend the day chatting, planting, and enjoying your mom.
If you are not someone that likes to putter in the garden, think about spending Mother’s Day at a beautiful garden with your mother. The Getty, The Huntington, Descanso Gardens to name a few near Los Angeles; all great choices.
Add a little meaning to your gardening, try some plants that remind you of your family. The scent of Irises and Lilacs elicit strong family memories for our family and are favorites for me and my siblings. You can really come up with some great plants now, because shopping at this time of year yields a large selection of shrubs, perennials, vegetables, and annuals at your local family run nursery.
Whatever you do, be sure to honor mom for Mother’s Day – gardening, cook out, or nice walk in the park it is all good if you are with your family.
Thank you mom, for giving me my love of gardening. It has been a blessing and has created a career for me; I appreciate you!
