Holiday Decorations are everywhere these days. Walk down an aisle for almost any store and you will find Halloween and even Christmas upon us! Yipes – I get Halloween for holiday decorations right now but Christmas!
I thought I would share some ways that you can use holiday decorations outside of your home, not just on the front door but in your planter beds and more!
I love to use pumpkins and gourds – yes they make lovely jack-o-lanterns but they also rest beautifully in a planter bed. I also love ornamental millet – now is the time to find it too!
The cover shot above was taken at Green Thumb Nursery in Newhall. It is lovely how they combined the bright orange of marigolds, with the deep purple of sweet potato vine to give us that spooky Halloween feel. Toss in a few pumpkins and voila’! You can pop in some spooky characters, a witch’s hat ,or some other festive addition if you’d like.
Don’t forget to look at some of the beautiful fall & winter blooming perennials. You can put them right in the planter beds, keep them in their pots in between your foliage or use them in a beautiful container design. Take a look at Rudbeckias for this season as well as Caryopteris, Gaillardia, Asters and Sedums which are often blooming right now.
When Halloween is over, you can take out the witch’s hat, add some gourds, a few pine cones and some fall leaves and you are ready for Thanksgiving.
When Christmas or Hanukkah rolls around you can keep the pine cones – add some string lights, large ornaments, and some potted kalanchoe, or poinsettia. Please note: poinsettia are toxic so don’t keep them where your dogs or cats (or kids) can get at them.
I created a container design for my client when we did the landscaping last year, it has really grown in beautifully and she has added her Halloween touches – look how cute!
