Spiritual Gardening

Butchart - Garden Calm

Gardening is passed on from generation to generation, as are many beautiful things in our world.  Gardens have always been a sanctuary;  from the very first The Garden of Eden, to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, to the Gardens of the Getty.  Gardening is an expressive art, a science, a labor of love,  and creating a garden is a way of making a spiritual connection to the earth.  The creation of a beautiful garden is the creation of a safe haven.

Butchart - Beauty

Spiritual Gardening means listening to nature, by incorporating the essence of what is already there and building on it your gardening moves towards being effortless and your garden becomes more balanced because you are adding to the whole instead of trying to make it form to your expectations.  Creating something out of nothing is very difficult, however because nature is an amazing canvas you don’t have to worry about doing that.  The basis of your garden is there, you just have to look for it.

Spiritual Gardening is nothing fancy, it is nothing mysterious, and it can be very very simple.  The point of gardening in general and spiritual gardening in particular is just to get you out into nature and connected with the earth and others around you.  Nature brings people together,   creates harmony,  and adds energy to your life.   Bonuses that few other hobbies afford us.

Again, it should be somewhat effortless, if you feel like think that you are just not a gardener or even if you are a seasoned gardener, there are some simple steps that you can take towards these ends:

Donate a tree in someone’s honor.  This is a tradition that has been a part of my family for many many years.  Since we’ve been doing this for years I bet that  my family has probably donated an entire forest!

Butchart - An Ancient

When someone loses a pet or a loved one, give them a living plant that they can plant in their garden to remember them by.

Gabriola Greens - July 2013

Plant a vegetable garden for you and your family.  If you have too much, donate to a local food pantry.

Create a healing garden – a herb garden is a good start.  And frankly any garden that draws you into it and soothes your soul is a healing garden.

Create a garden that entrances birds and butterflies.

Go visit a garden (or two or three or…) my aunt is coming to visit next month and we have two gardens (in five days) on our list already.  We’ll be connecting spiritually and emotionally with each other and with the gardens.  That’s what nature wants us to do.

Hiking is a great way to connect spiritually with nature, what about adding some yoga in a beautiful outdoor location?

Meditating in a beautiful garden, what could be better than that?

By putting your imagination and the things that you love into your garden, you are doing spiritual gardening every time you step into your space.  If you just relax and enjoy yourself outside you will begin to bring your own flow to your garden, you will help connect to the earth, will create harmony and bring energy into your garden.  Bringing energy into your garden, will bring it into your home and that in turn brings abundance into your life.  You in turn will share it with others, and that is the key, you will be bringing energy and abundance to those around you, to the community, who will in turn do the same.  A wonderful cycle.
