Garden Inspiration – Travel

Containers - Monteriggioni window boxes

I am always inspired when I travel, and this summer is no exception.  I have been very lucky to be able to travel with my family to the UK and Italy and of course I have brought back some amazing ideas, photos, and garden inspiration.

When we first arrived in London, one of the things that struck me was that there were container designs and potted plants all around.  There was not very much real estate available for large scale plantings (except in the parks and gardens) so the residents and business owners alike spent time tending to small well kept garden pieces that grabbed my eye.  They are truly Garden Inspiration for me and more importantly to suggest to my clients that have spaces to spruce up, call attention to, or use as a focal point.  These are also fabulous ideas for people with very limited space to create a garden.

This post contains a few of my favorite container designs, some because they are inventive, some because they are whimsical, and some because they are just creative!

My husband and his band, Little Caesar, played at the Download Festival in Donnington and believe it or not there were even Container Designs in front of the Artists’ tent.

The creativity continued as we moved on to Italy, we stayed in Florence and took a side trip through the Tuscan countryside where we saw beautiful window boxes, and in Florence an entire floor of balconies overflowing with plants.  I apologize for the not so stellar photograph, it was taken from our cab window and if any of you have been in a cab in Italy I’m sure you’ll understand that it is nothing short of a miracle that I captured that shot!

The point of this blog post is not only to show you some beautiful containers, but to give you a little garden inspiration.  If you think your yard is too small, if you think that you don’t have room for plants I’m here to tell you that you couldn’t be more wrong.

As long as you have a spare square of flat space, a watering can, and some inspiration you can have a beautiful, colorful, living work of art to enjoy.  For those of you in tiny spaces, remember a garden is where your heart is, a place that you’ll find inspiration in, where you can relax and enjoy life – no matter if it is an entire backyard or a small earthenware window box.  If it is yours, it can be your sanctuary.
