March in the Garden

March in the garden is when the rest of the country is almost catching up to us!  They surely won’t catch up to our weeds.  With all the rain we’ve had this year, my prime concern of late has been weeding.  I’m making room for the soil to catch up some of those sun rays, and room to put down more mulch.  I’ve had a few iris bloom in my garden already, but most of my other plants are just growing and getting stronger.

This lovely abutilon is putting on a great show at the nursery, you might want to snap her up for a shade garden companion. This month, March, is an amazing time in the garden in Southern California.  I can actually spend more than just mornings working in the garden because the weather is so mild.  We are even expecting some rain again this weekend!  I am so happy that California is working out of the drought, but remember we are never very far away from drought so treat your garden with love.  Think about using the watershed gardening principles to create a truly sustainable garden that will capture water.  If you had flooding this year, think about how to turn your soil into a sponge!  I love to help people make their gardens a watershed, a working ecosystem that will help save our planet.  We had tons of rain, I had NO flooding in my front yard where I created a sponge of my crappy old lawn a couple years back.  I have good rich soil that supports my plants and the environment.  Call me and I’ll help you do the same.

Here is your list for March, get cracking on those gardening tasks and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Oh, and while you are planning March, put March 25, 2017 on your calendar.  I’ll be speaking at Green Thumb Nursery in Newhall for their Spring opening.  I’m working on creating a nice seminar, if you have any requests feel free to let me know.  Green Thumb is located at 23734 Newhall Avenue Newhall, Ca. 91321. I’ll be starting at 9:30 till about 11:00 then staying around for some time to help you find plants or answer questions.  The day is full of fun, raffles, prizes, popcorn, lemonade, and some great vendors showing their wares.  I hope to see you then!  In the meantime I can be reached at 661-917-3521 or visit my website and contact me there.
