Here are your July Gardening tasks, June proved to be a scorcher so if it continues please do your July Gardening early in the day or as (if) it cools off.
I have been spending 10-20 minutes each morning possible weeding. Since I took my lawn out last year and planted water wise plants, that pesky devil grass comes back in spots even though I sheet mulched! It took a while (I used cardboard) so I was lulled into thinking that I’d beaten it the first time. WRONG! So that is one of my July Gardening chores (as well as pretty much every month).
I am happy to watch all the plants growing in and know that eventually the weeding will be less and less a part of my life. My verbena rigida looks exceptionally pretty these days and is really starting to spread. I just love this plant and don’t even mind when it freezes a little in the winter. I feel like that means less pruning for me!
The carex in my rain garden also looks great, filling in and melding with my Miscanthus capensis which will put on quite a show come autumn.
My salvia spathacea is getting big, and I see a blossom starting on one of the plants, I just hope it doesn’t bloom while I’m out of town! The hummingbirds love it and I love my hummingbirds.
Next month at reminder time I hope to show you a few more water wise plants doing their thing so that you can see what works well her in Santa Clarita.
