Here are your Gardening Chores for September in Southern California. September has begun (where did the year go?) and it is labor day weekend which around much of the country means Autumn. Not here in Southern California. There are quite a number of gardening chores that you can take care of this month, but please remember it is still warm out there so take care of yourself and your plants.
I was just a Theodore Payne picking up some plants for an installation next week and there are some plants that I didn’t get, although the were available. Think about the heat and the need for water at this time. When you plant new plants regardless of how drought tolerant they are, they need to be established and that means watering them. Arctostaphylos and ceanothus do not like to be watered in the summer (and it still feels like summer) so don’t plant them until the end of October or November.
That being said, this is also a great time to plan your garden. Take this hot month and outline what you want to change, add to, or refresh. If you get all your ideas on paper, you can act on the new planting when it cools off and keep your plants happy. Who knows you might also benefit from some El Nino water (if we’re lucky).
