Gardening Tasks for the Month of May

July - Rhodies & Roses Bingly, UK

May is one of those months in Southern California that can be light and breezing one day, then blistering hot the next, especially in Santa Clarita.  I’d like to get you thinking about your gardening tasks for May now, so that you can plan ahead and pace yourself.  Gardening Tasks are most enjoyable when you are comfortable, so early mornings and evenings at this time of year are the best times to work.  May is a beautiful time all around the country and since gardening tasks vary, it is most helpful to have a list that suits your area.

I have really been enjoying my birds, and May is a great time for me to watch them and enjoy their songs.  A nice addition to your garden task list would be putting up a bird feeder, or adding a bird bath.  With the heat coming earlier and earlier it is great to help your bird friends out with food, shelter and water.  I have a nyger feeder in the backyard for finches, and I can testify that it has attracted many other types of birds including a couple Hooded Oriols and an Acorn Woodpecker.  I just love them!
