Small Space Garden Design is a challenging task for most homeowners. There are many scenarios that require small space garden design. A Condo or Town Home usually has a small yard, an apartment might only afford you a balcony or fire escape, and some newer homes have large indoor spaces but and small outdoor areas. Don’t despair, many features that you would find in a large home’s outdoor space can still be yours.
I’m going to give you an exercise to do when designing a small space (or any space for that matter), then follow up with more next week, another post will be up and I’ll be giving a seminar next Saturday locally. (details below) If you are going to attend the seminar, doing this in advance would be wonderful.
We are going to create a Concept Statement for your space. Each space that you have should be treated separately, so if you have more than one space you’ll want to do this little exercise more than once.
Create a Concept Statement by asking yourself the following questions:
1. What will happen in this space?
2. What does it feel like being in the space?
3. What does this space look like – be very general.
You might come up with a statement that looks like:
My space is a relaxation space, that feels cozy and warm, and makes me feel like I am in a secluded clearing.
Now that you have the statement, we have a place to go. Don’t worry if your existing outdoor space is currently a doggie destroyed wasteland, an outgrown child’s play space, or simply boring; transformation is what this is all about. Taking your space and transforming it into your dream is where the creativity and fun begins!
Finding clarity with your Concept Statement will help make your Small Space Garden Design more accessible, it will give you some vision and give us a direction.
I’d love if you would join me next Saturday 1/24/15 for a seminar at the Santa Clarita Library 24500 Main Street in Newhall, Ca. 91321. I’ll be speaking at 11 am and would love to have you there! Learn more about me at my website, and you can contact me there as well.
