Iris Care For Southern California

May - Iris 'Ida Red'

Iris Care may not be top of your mind right now in this heat, but if you take a few moments to peruse this information you will be ready to go when it cools over the next months.

Click here to learn about Iris Care.

Dividing your Iris and taking a little time to work with them will allow you to share Iris with friends, spruce your garden up, and make sure that your colorful tuber friends are happy and healthy.  Iris Care – easy and very worthwhile.

Iris are one of my favorite plants, they remind me of my Grandma Frances and the love has been handed down from her to my mother Evie and I share that love with my sister.  So really Irises are family to me, since I could not bring my family from NY with me (or even the rhizomes that Grandma had – California frowns upon that) I have collected a new family of Iris over the years.  One of my favorites is Cable Car – this cinnamon colored stunner that has a huge impact.  I love to mix it with other flowers of complimentary colors, I’m using it here with a Geranium x maderense in lavender to off set the Cable Car.

I know that water wise plants are the go to these days, but you can still have the beauty of Iris.  They may need more than weekly water, but they can certainly live well on a two or three day week schedule – as long as you deep water.  You can comply with your water regulations and enjoy the beauty of Iris!  Give them a try, Grandma Frances will smile.
