Mulch is a great addition to every garden. With Southern California facing drought conditions and water restrictions being instituted, mulch can be a great tool in your arsenal. Keeping a 2″ -4 ” layer of mulch around your plants will help retain moisture in the soil, protect the roots of your plants and even help reduce weeds in your garden.
Mulch made of organic material is great for the soil, it adds nutrients as it decomposes and welcomes beneficial insects. Mulch made of rocks and pebbles can make a bold design statement and work great with succulents.
I personally prefer bark mulch for the properties it adds to the soil, and I like the look of it as well. There are many beautiful natural bark mulches that you can purchase, and you can often find a local tree company that is willing to let you have some of their wood chips too.
