Roses in Southern California

Rosa 'Pumpkin Patch'

Yes, it is January so I’m going to start talking about roses again.  I want to make sure that you don’t let those landscape janitors of yours prune your roses too early.  Like now… In Southern California the best time to prune your roses (and apply dormant spray) is around Super Bowl Sunday.  So, put that on your calendar and have a chat with the mow blow guys to make sure that they don’t start hacking now.

Now if you don’t have Landscape Janitors or would like to start taking more charge of your landscaping this weekend marks the first weekend of Rose Care University Classes at Otto & Son’s Nursery in Fillmore, CA. and I highly recommend it.  Here is a link to their website, they are a wonderful gem of a nursery, family owned and operated and they really know what they are talking about when it comes to Roses (and fruit trees and more).  The entire month of January 2014, they will be spending their Saturdays teaching you how to care for your roses, it is a two hour class packed with information and the fee is nominal ($15.00).  Be sure to bring extra money though, because their plants are outstanding and you won’t be able to leave without at least a few, if you are anything like me at all!

If for some reason you can’t make it to Otto & Sons during January; you live in Kalamazoo, MI or some other far away place, your cat ate your car keys, or you’re just plain busy you can take a look at my blog post on Rose Pruning and take it in your own hands.  You won’t have as much fun as going to the nursery, but at least you’ll be prepared when Super Bowl Sunday in So Cal or springtime east of us.
