Landscape Design – Moss For My Sister

Moss

Being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita has its perks; the weather is outstanding, I get to hang around with great people, I select fantastic plants, and hardscape materials and since I blog – I can send out Birthday wishes via the internet.  My wonderful sister is celebrating her birthday in Paris, so I’m not sure when she’ll see this but… HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURIEANN!

Today I am going to write a little bit about one of LaurieAnn’s favorite plants, moss,  then I’m going to let her tell you more with a link to a post I did three years ago on her birthday.

Moss, yes LaurieAnn loves moss and as a matter of fact so do I.  Problem is she can grow it and I can’t.  It isn’t that I’m not fully capable, it is just that I live in an arid environment.  She lives in Connecticut so she has a leg up on it.

Moss is a great ground cover for a shade garden, it comes in shades of green that can blanket your planter bed and it feels like velvet.

Moss has no real roots, and gets all its nutrients from the air and has very simple requirements. Shade, acidic soil and adequate moisture. The soil it is planted in should also be clean and firm.

Some great uses for moss are in Japanese Gardens, around boulders, as pathways, adjacent to a patio, or in a rock garden.  So if you have the right conditions, moss could be a wonderfully beautiful addition to your garden.  A little research for the type of landscape design you want for your home goes a long way to creating the garden of your dreams!

Happy Birthday Laur!
